INTRODUCTION

STRANGE THINGS are going on at Whitwell Middle School.

Inside the school, giant paper clips dangle from the ceiling, and the hallways are adorned with cutouts of butterflies. Outside is something that doesn't seem to belong: a small piece of railway track.

Whitwell never had a rail connection to the world. The old coal mine closed years ago, and its rail connection didn't go all the way to the town.

But today, welded to this small piece of track, sits a railcar. It is a small boxcar, not of the sort you normally see in the United States.

The railcar is surrounded by a well-tended garden with flowers, shrubs, and copper sculptures. Next to is stands an eight-foot-high iron cubicle with a big, shiny paper clip and metal statues of a girl and boy catching butterflies.

On one side of the boxcar a sign reads "Holocaust Mahnmal der Kinder." On the other side, this German inscription is translated: "The Children's Holocaust Memorial."
